FAQ?

What does toxoplasmosis do to humans?

When people do have symptoms, they are very similar to the flu and can include:

  • swollen lymph nodes (small, bean-shaped organs found in your groin, neck, and armpits that help the body fight infection)
  • fever
  • body aches and pains
  • fatigue
  • headache

What are the signs of toxoplasmosis?

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty breathing or coughing
  • Jaundice
  • Muscle weakness
  • Paralysis
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Eye inflammation
  • Seizures, tremors, or other neurological symptoms

Is toxoplasmosis really dangerous?

Untreated, these infections can lead to blindness. But if your immune system is weakened, especially as a result of HIV / AIDS, toxoplasmosis can lead to seizures and life-threatening illnesses such as encephalitis — a serious brain infection. In people with AIDS, untreated encephalitis from toxoplasmosis is fatal.

Does toxoplasmosis ever go away?

There’s no cure for toxoplasmosis. When it gets into your body, it doesn’t go away completely. Thus, your best approach is to avoid infections. You can do that by: Taking care with food. Anybody with contaminated hands can infect raw meat. Cooking meat to 152 degrees kills the toxoplasma parasite.
